Aqua-links is a conservation education project that teaches secondary school students the value of conserving the biodiversity of the African great lakes, with a focus on Lake Victoria. It began in February 2010 as an exciting new conservation effort between NaFIRRI (National Fisheries Resources Research Institute) and the Toronto Zoo in Canada. The program aims to link Canadian and Ugandan students and enable discussion of biodiversity and water conservation issues. Students from the two countries study issues relating to the devastation of local fish species; in particular, the Atlantic Salmon of North America and the Haplochromine cichlids of East Africa. The program is supported by in-class visits by NaFIRRI staff and student visits to NaFIRRI institute. Linking between students in Ontario and Uganda will occur via the internet and vecotours!
Today, our tour will include an introduction to the conservation issues of Lake Victoria, from the perspective of fisheries experts and students.
We are looking forward to welcoming you on the tour, which will start at 6pm (Uganda time) on Sunday, March 13th, 2011.
